| Trout Trolling Techniques With the coming warmer weather we’re getting lots of enquiries about trout trolling. The most asked question is how to target fish at different depths of the water column. There are a host of ways to get to these fish. Among them are snap weights, downunder sinkers, paravanes, leadline and downriggers. Snap weights are a little clip which attaches to your line about half way between your lure and reel. To the snap weight a range of different sinkers can be added to get to different depths. These are placed just in front of the lure and stay in the system when you land a fish. Various sizes allow different levels to be reached but the deepest they can get to is 30 feet. Paravanes are another option but are the hardest way to get down to fish. These are placed about 6-8 feet in front of the lures. They pull very hard on the line and remain in the system right up until landing the fish. We have used them previously with some success. It’s difficult to know if you have a fish on them if you don’t watch your rod for a strike as the paravanes pull so hard and small trout tire quickly.. Leadline is one of the better options to use. Leadline must be setup on a barrel reel dedicated to just that use. The leadline comes in 100 yard lengths and is colour coded. Each colour in 10 yards long to let you know how much line you have out. The leadline needs to be backed with at least 50 yards or more of braid or mono to allow the full amount of line to get into the water.. This is the most popular option amongst anglers because of price and the ease of use. Downriggers are what we believe to be the best way to target trout when there down deep. The downrigger has a heavy weight attached to the stainless steel wire. To this weight (called a bomb) attaches a release clip which the line is passed through. The whole rig is then lowered to the depth that you want to fish at. When the trout hooks up the line releases from the clip and the angler fights the fish directly.
